Want to disappear from the web?

Has it gotten to the point in your life where you've decided that being EVERYWHERE on the web just isn't worth it anymore?  This website will help you delete your account on some social media sites...and let you know which ones are impossible to delete!!  JustDeleteMe.com

To me, this just brings up the question of whether or not it really is important to be on the web?  It certainly hasn't helped me get a job or any of my friends.  It consumes hours of one's time that might be better spent enjoying the company of family or friends.  Maybe it would even help the job search?

Maybe I should try and experiment and not go online for a week--even to check e-mails.  We'll see what I get accomplished--especially regarding the job search.

Anyone else in?

Eviction.... even the word is ugly!

Just went through the process of evicting a tenant from one of my company's properties.  It was a nightmare!

Best advice I can give regarding evictions?  Avoid them in the first place.

If you own and rent property, make sure you vet your tenant first. There's a free database available through the city of Philadelphia that can tell you if a person has been a defendant in municipal court in a landlord/tenant dispute.  Here's the link:

Do a credit check.  Talk to past landlords and employers.  Listen to your gut!

If you're already stuck with a tenant who won't pay rent and you need to evict the person, here's a brief article on the steps involved.  Contact HAPCO (Homeowner Association of Philadelphia) at 215-684-1684 for referrals.   Hire a lawyer with actual experience in evictions...vet them too!

A long, draw-out eviction process costs you money in lost rental income in addition to the out-of-pocket costs of the eviction itself.  As a landlord, you must be prepared to take steps to protect your investment.  Protecting against and being ready for an eviction is one of them!

Could anyone have saved this young man?

I did not know who Aaron Swartz was.  Only after reading about his suicide did I learn a little bit about him from a few online articles.  I often read about these amazing young people and feel a twinge of jealousy, but still,  I admire and respect them and the gifts that God has bestowed upon them.

Aaron Swartz was clearly a complicated person, but still, he was only 26.  26.  That's still young.
Does being young and brilliant mean you couldn't benefit from the advice, counsel and comfort of someone with 50 years of life experience?   This competition and distrust among the ages is stupid and counter productive.

I have also read that this young man may have been depressed and that complicates things.  The discussion about mental illness following the Newtown massacre and our lack of sufficient programs and policies to help these people and our general lack of concern for people with mental illness continues and frankly, is appalling.   Clearly, Swartz and the killer at the Newtown schools took different routes but the end result was the same, the tragic loss of young life.  What a waste.

Here's a link to one story about Aaron Swartz.

Social Media Use in the Office

It's really important for every business to have a social media usage policy in place for its employees.  Mis-use of social media can do harm to your business's reputation....and you may not even be aware it's happening!   There is an upcoming seminar about just this subject in Philadelphia.  I've attached the link for your convenience!

Do you know what a "5 & 10" is?

It's a magical place where you can buy things for as little as five cents. Well, you can't buy too many things for five cents anymore but it's fun to reminisce about penny candies and one's first trip to the store alone. So, congratulations to a Quakertown landmark on your 100th anniversary. Thanks for the memories. http://www.mcall.com/news/local/mc-sines-5and10-quakertown-20120811,0,3783856.story?track=rss
